India was bowled out for just 46 runs, marking their lowest total at home, during the second day of the opening Test against New Zealand at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Thursday.
This is also India’s third-lowest score ever in Tests.
Matt Henry and William O’Rourke were the key players in India’s collapse, with Henry taking five wickets and O’Rourke grabbing four. India was bowled out in under two sessions, all in gloomy conditions.
Only Rishabh Pant (20) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (13) reached double digits, while five Indian batters—Virat Kohli, Sarfaraz Khan, KL Rahul, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Jasprit Bumrah—were all out for a duck.

India's star batter Virat Kohli's return to the No.3 spot after a gap of 8 years during the Bengaluru Test against New Zealand ended in disaster as he was dismissed for a 9-ball duck. Kohli has come into the spot as the usual No.3, Shubman Gill was ruled out of the match after not being fully fit.
Gill was dealing with neck stiffness and wasn't 100% ready for the game, according to the BCCI after the toss. Kohli last batted at No. 3 back in 2016 against the West Indies. People thought KL Rahul might take the No. 3 spot since he knows the Chinnaswamy stadium well, being a local hero. But India decided to keep him in his new spot in the middle order instead.
India really needed Kohli to step up after Rohit Sharma got out early, thanks to Tim Southee. India won the toss and chose to bat first, even with the lights on. The ball was swinging all over the place, making it tough for the Indian openers against Southee and Matt Henry.
Kohli looked a bit nervous right from the start as the ball kept swinging. Will O'Rourke bowled a perfect delivery with a great field set, and the ball swung right into Kohli's chest. He could only get a glove on it, and it ended up flying to Glenn Philips, who made a great catch.
The crowd in Bengaluru was shocked as India found themselves in big trouble.
Kohli's record at No. 3 isn't impressive. He's played 6 matches in that position and only scored 97 runs, averaging 16.16. This was the first time he got out for a duck while batting at No. 3.
It was also Kohli's first duck in Tests in 32 innings, and it just so happened to be against New Zealand, like his last duck during the Blackcaps' tour of India in 2021.
Rishabh Pant injury near his knee:
Dhruv Jurel is stepping in for Rishabh Pant, who seems to have hurt his knee and is limping in pain. The team physio came out to check on him, and it looks like Pant is really struggling with his right knee. The team is gathered around him, and it’s likely he’ll need to leave the field for medical attention. We don’t know yet how serious the injury is, but they’re being careful to make sure he’s okay.
While Pant gets treated, Dhruv Jurel will take over as the substitute wicket-keeper. The team is hoping for good news about Pant and that he recovers quickly.
