International Day of Charity 2022: History and Importance

Mother Teresa, who was 87 years old, passed away on September 5th, 1997. On the anniversary of her passing, the International Day of Charity is celebrated each year.

To commemorate Mother Teresa's passing anniversary, people celebrate the International Day of Charity on September 5 every year. For her work fighting poverty and misery, she received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.

Charity builds real social links and aids in the creation of inclusive, resilient societies, much like the ideas of volunteerism and philanthropy. It can improve already-existing public services in child welfare, housing, education, and health care as well as lessen the harshest effects of humanitarian disasters. Additionally, it promotes the idea of humanity during times of war and fights for the rights of groups who are oppressed and underprivileged.

History of International Day of Charity:

Mother Teresa became an emblem of Christian generosity as a result of her work with Kolkata’s impoverished people. It made her an instantly recognizable figure around the world. In 1950, the celebrated nun established Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata, which rose to prominence for its assistance to the poor. The great personality passed away on 5 September 1997, at the age of 87. The International Day of Charity was first marked by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012.

In order to encourage people, NGOs, and other stakeholders from all around the world to participate in charity and volunteer activity, the International Day of Charity was established. Later, the occasion was related to the viewpoints expressed at the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit in 2015. The meeting urged closing the income gap between countries and giving aid to underdeveloped nations. To complete all of the sustainable development goals by 2030 was the major motto.

This unique day inspires all NGOs and volunteer organisations to engage in philanthropic activities. On the anniversary of Mother Teresa's passing, her supporters gather at her grave in Kolkata for special prayers, thanksgiving, and to place floral tributes.
